OCPS Benchmarks

  • The OCPS Music Benchmarks reflect the vision and content of the National Standards for Music Education and The Sunshine State Standards. The benchmarks describe what students at each grade level will know and be able to do in music. Skills and concepts introduced at a certain grade level are not studied in that grade only, but are continued in subsequent years as students progress through the K-5 curriculum. Here are the benchmarks described. For more detailed or grade level information about each benchmark contact Mrs. Legan.
  • SING - The student sings, alone and with others, a varied repertoire of music.
  • PLAY- The student performs on instruments, alone and with others, a varied repertoire of music.
  • READ and NOTATE - The student reads and notates music.
  • IMPROVISE, COMPOSE and ARRANGE - The student improvises melodies, variations and accompaniments. The student composes and arranges music within specific guidelines.
  • LISTEN, ANALYZE, DESCRIBE and EVALUATE - The student listens to, analyzes, and describes music. The student evaluates music and music performance.
  • UNDERSTAND and RELATE to CULTURE and HISTORY - The student understands music in relation to culture and history.
  • UNDERSTAND and RELATE to OTHER STUDIES and LIFE EXPERIENCE- The student understands the relationship between music, the other arts, and desciplines outside the arts. The student understands the relationship between music and the world beyond the school setting.
